CELLULITE – a word that all women know, dread, fear and most importantly, hate. This hatred has snowballed into a very lucrative industry, with millions of women all around the world spending tens of millions of dollars trying to rid themselves of their pesky cellulite. Unfortunately though, most (if not all) of these conventional methods pushed through advertisements and cheap gimmicks do not actually work.
Alright, so, what can you do? Is there anything that can help rid us of cellulite? Happily, the answer is YES, there are things that you can do! And fortunately, these remedies will not cost you hundreds of dollars.
So, stop putting that ridiculous “skin firming” cream on your legs and butt and start doing the actual things that will get you closer to that sexier version of you.
What is Cellulite?
Before we get started with the “how’s” it is important to understand the “why’s” and “what’s” – more specifically understanding what cellulite even is, and why we have it.
No, it is not the first signs of your body self-destructing, and no, you are not a freak for having it – so relax.
Cellulite is simply the result of swollen fat cells putting pressure on surrounding fibrous tissue. This pressure then pulls the skin down and creates the infamous “pitting” that we all know so well.
The reason why women are more prone to cellulite than men is due mainly to fluctuations in hormones, and the fact that women’s bodies are surged with estrogen.
Fluctuations in estrogen levels (both by menstrual cycles and through age) can lead to the break down of blood vessels in the hip and thigh areas. This can then result in a decrease in collagen production, which can exaggerate cellulite. Furthermore, a woman’s menstrual cycle triggers the release of certain enzymes, which actually deteriorate collagen.
What NOT To Do
Now that we have a bit of an understanding on what cellulite is, it is time to give advice on what NOT to do.
“Cellulite Massage” – these “massages” are intended to separate storages of fat cells, and make the appearance of cellulite less noticeable by breaking it apart. Perhaps it may work in the short-term, but this is definitely NOT a long-term solution. It can also get quite costly… Do not do it!
“Cellulite Shoes” – okay, really? The fact that these are even on the market is quite baffling, and the fact that people purchase them is even more so. Wearing these will only make you look ridiculous, and will definitely NOT help with eliminating cellulite.
“Cellulite Ointments/Creams” – the purpose of these products are to “inhibit” the production of fat storage, which literally makes no sense. In actuality, all these products do is provoke an inflammatory reaction on the applied area – the swelling then makes the cellulite less noticeable and visible. However, once the swelling decreases, your cellulite will return. There is a few supplements that help increase blood circulation in areas you rub on that are showing some real benefits, as you will read below increase blood circulation to these areas is very important. Message me if you are curious about any of them.
What TO Do – Three Steps
Time to get to the part you care about– what you CAN do to help alleviate cellulite!
The first step is to LOSE BODY FAT – big surprise, huh? The big concern here is that the more fat storages you have, the more pronounced your cellulite becomes. As we said above, the “pitting” of cellulite is caused by pressure being placed upon the skin; the less fat you have, the less pressure that will be applied.
Second step? Increase your blood circulation – that’s right, get that heart pumping, lady! The nice thing about step two is that is directly correlates to step one – so you’re pretty much hitting two birds with one stone here. Improving your blood circulation can decrease swelling and inflammation around the body, which can result in a decreased visibility of cellulite. Getting the blood flowing well also increases the repair of collagen and connective tissues around the body (which will directly affect how your cellulite looks).
Last but not least, be conscious of the health of your skin. If your skin is loose, and has lost its elasticity, chances are high that your cellulite is prominent. Take the necessary steps to preserve and promote the health of your skin.
Hit the gym and lift weights – this will get your blood circulating really well, and will also help you build muscle at the same time. Both side effects help reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Get in those Omega-3s – omega 3 fatty acids help stimulate the creation of collagen, as well as help decrease inflammation and swelling within the body. So, start eating that salmon fillet and stop seeing that cellulite!
Consider revising your diet – working out is not the only way to get slim – eating plays a HUGE role in the maintenance and storage of stubborn body fat, which is typically the type worst affected by cellulite. Try even integrating foods and herbs that are known to help with blood circulation and inflammatory issues, into your regular diet. The list is quite vast, but even try things such as:
- Cayenne pepper
- Citrus fruits
The bottom line here is that there is no “magical, easy cure” for cellulite – it all involves time, dedication and work. If the appearance of cellulite is something that truly concerns you, then be proactive with it, and to make a change for yourself.
Always consider though that YOU are your worst critic, and as long as you feel fit, strong and healthy, you are beautiful!
